MEMBERS of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales are recording the new Doctor Who soundtrack at their new home in the Wales Millennium Centre.

The orchestra’s music will add drama to the action scenes filmed by David Tennant and his co-stars during the first of four Doctor Who specials, which will air on the BBC at Easter.

The music is being recorded at BBC Hoddinott Hall, which is part of the Cardiff Bay- based WMC.

It’s the first time that the orchestra – which has worked on the Doctor Who music since 2005 – has recorded the programme’s soundtrack using its new facilities.

BBC National Orchestra of Wales director David Murray said: “We are thrilled that the orchestra records the soundtrack for this special programme and is associated with the BBC Wales series.

“The opportunity to perform a different style of music helps to showcase the diversity of the orchestra.

“It is also particularly exciting to be recording a soundtrack in our new home for the first time since our move here in January, with the excellent recording and performing facilities that BBC Hoddinott Hall offers to the orchestra.”

Meanwhile, the orchestra will be joined by principal guest conductor, Jac van Steen from Holland, for its tour to North and Mid Wales.

The musicians will perform at Aberystwyth Arts Centre on March 27, Prichard Jones Hall, Bangor, on March 28 and at William Aston Hall, Wrexham, on March 29.

The music will feature great romantic masterworks, including pieces by Dvorak, full of warmth and poetry.
