Soundtrack 09 is GO!!
Hello Soundtrack Fans!
At long last, we're pleased to announce the full programme of events for Soundtrack: the International Film and Music Festival 2009!
As you'll probably know by now, the festival will take place in various venues around Cardiff and the Bay area from Wednesday the 18th to Sunday the 22nd of November 2009.
First, let's meet our Special Guests!
John Cale
2009's event will see musical legend, composer, artist and sometime actor John Cale return to the land of his fathers. Cale, who was born in Garnant in the Aman Valley of West Wales, made his name as a co-founder of iconic New York art-rock group The Velvet Underground in the 1960's, before forging a successful solo career, becoming an in-demand producer and making the jump in to the world of composition for film. Cale, who represented Wales at the Venice Biennale earlier in the year, returns to the Capital to celebrate his career as both a composer and as a solo musician, through two very special events.
On the 20th of November, John Cale will take part in an ‘In Conversation' event, where he will discuss his film work before a screening of the cult favourite American Psycho (for which provided the score) at Cardiff Cineworld.
The following evening, the 21st of November, Cale will perform a very special concert at the newly re-opened Coal Exchange venue in Cardiff Bay. For the first time ever, Cale will perform his seminal solo album Paris 1919 in its entirety, backed by his LA based band and a large compliment of backing musicians. With tickets already selling quickly to Cale's international fanbase, this unique event is true jewel in Soundtrack's crown.
Super Furry Animals
Also appearing live at Soundtrack ‘09 will be Cardiff psych-rockers Super Furry Animals, who will also perform at the Coal Exchange as part of a special series of events celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the iconic Creation Records label. The band will perform tracks from their years on the label on the 20th of November, alongside Mark Gardner, frontman of fellow former Creation Records act Ride.
Earlier in the evening, there will be another special Creation Records event held at Cardiff Cineworld. ‘Upside Down: A Creation Records Evening' will be an exclusive ‘In Conversation' event that will feature the unveiling of the trailer for the new Creation Records documentary ‘Upside Down', as well as exclusive clips from the forthcoming film, due to be released in February 2010. This launch event will be hosted by director Danny O'Connor and Ride frontman Mark Gardner, who will discuss the movie and Creation's lasting impression on the modern musical landscape. The Super Furry Animals concert, titled ‘Recreation', will be the very first in a string of concerts by former Creation Records artists that will take place around the UK in 2010, in conjunction with the launch of ‘Upside Down'.
Gruff Rhys
Gruff Rhys is best known as the frontman and main songwriter for psychedelic rockers Super Furry Animals, as well as his solo outings and his recent Mercury Music Prize nominated collaboration act Neon Neon. However, Soundtrack is pleased to welcome Gruff to this year's festival as a film maker, as alongside his co-director Dylan Goch, Gruff Rhys will present the Premiere of his new movie Separado! at Cardiff's Cineworld on the 19th of November.
Separado! is a psychedelic western musical in which Gruff takes us on a pan continental road trip in search of his long lost Patagonian uncle, the poncho wearing guitarist Rene Griffiths. The Premier of Separado! will be followed by a Q&A featuring Gruff Rhys, co-director Dylan Goch and Guardian journalist and author Will Hodgkinson.
Julien Temple
Julien Temple is an acclaimed film and a music video director who cut his teeth during the chaotic days of the British punk rock explosion, directing the Sex Pistols movie ‘The Great Rock N Roll Swindle' and the David Bowie vehicle ‘Absolute Beginners', before making a name for himself stateside as music video director, working with the likes of The Rolling Stones, Neil Young, Van Halen, Depeche Mode, Paul McCartney and Blur amongst others.
Further acclaim followed the release of his second Sex Pistols film ‘The Filth and The Fury' in 2006, which was followed by the critically heralded Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten. These two titles were the first two instalments in a trilogy on the British music of the 1970's. Soundtrack is pleased to present his final movie from the trilogy, Oil City Confidential; a film noir feature length documentary about Dr Feelgood. The screening of Oil City Confidential at Chapter Arts Centre on Sunday the 22nd of November will be followed by a Q&A session, in which Julien Temple will answer questions on the movie.
Screenings at Soundtrack
The festival also features a packed schedule of screenings taking place at Cineworld and Chapter Arts Centre over the 5 days.
Opening Night will see a special preview of the newly restored double Oscar winning classic The Red Shoes. This classic film from 1948 has been painstakingly restored UCLA Film & Television Archive in association with The British Film Institute, The Film Foundation, ITV Global Entertainment Ltd., and Janus Films, and has been wowing critics across the global festival circuit in 2009.
Described by Martin Scorsese as 'The movie that plays in my heart', the iconic director recently presented the movie at the Cannes International Film Festival to rapturous applause. The Red Shoes screening takes place on the 18th of November at Cineworld, and is presented by Soundtrack in association with BAFTA Cymru.
Other screening at Soundtrack include Beautiful Mistake, which saw John Cale join up with the great and the good of the Welsh music scene in 2000, to provide a moving portrait of a developing Cardiff; A special double bill of Hammer Horror films The Quatermass Xperiment and To The Devil a Daughter, preceded by an In Conversation about the music of Hammer by historians Marcus Hearn and Dr David Huckvale; a BAFTA Cymru screening of the extremely powerful and intimate documentary Mugabe and the White African; Canadian indie flick Let Him Be, where 2 aspiring film makers discover a very much alive John Lennon in rural Canada (think Blair Witch for Beatles fans!); 2009 festival circuit favourite Paper Heart; A charity screening of the Youssou N'Dour soundtracked children's movie Kirikou and the Sorceress; and All Tomorrow's Parties, a look at the festival of the same name featuring performances by Iggy and the Stooges, Patti Smith, Sonic Youth and The Yeah Yeah Yeah's.
The Closing Night Movie at Soundtrack 2009 will be a special preview of Bunny and the Bull, a bizarre new comedy from The Mighty Boosh director Paul King, which sees him once again working with Boosh stars Noel Fielding, Julian Barratt and Richard Ayoade.
As well as Premiers, Previews, Screenings and Special Events, Soundtrack also features and Education Strand consisting of workshops, seminars and symposiums on everything from film literacy and composition to how to get your music in the movies.
